Depends on the technique you are practicing. Mostly, traditional techniques use silence or a mantra. I think that music does distract the mind; it is fun and insightful, but it will make your mind wander, which is what you are trying to avoid when you meditate.

Depends on what kind of meditation your doing or wanting to achieve...I prefer absolute silence...or crashing waves ;)
