Does the president really have a lot of power? If not, then why do people think so?

He does have a lot of power, but what ever law he makes can be vetoed if it's wrong.

Depends on the President, regardless of what you thought of him, Reagan had an incredible gift of gab, his soothing, comfortable voice lulled people into loving him. FDR practically TALKED our country out of a depression with his radio "Fireside chats"...JFK had a terrific charisma and could sell ice cubes to Eskimoes.

This is where people from other countries have the wrong idea about the President of the United States. He's our leader but he can't just start a war without permission from congress nor can he write up his own laws , some minor things he can do on his own like pardon a prisoner . He can veto a bill. USA government doesn't put one man in charge to do whatever he wants...it don't work that wayLike (1)
