My mother did and I honestly believed most of it. I stopped listening to her and my life got a lot better. The good thing that came out of it is I know how fragile a child's self esteem can be and how much what a parent says to them can matter, so I am very careful not to be critical of my children like my mother was of me. I'm real with them. I don't fill them full of empty compliments. But I also don't criticize everything they do or make them feel like they are undesirable in any way.
