EAR CANDLES? Have you tried them? What's your experience?

I tried ear candling twice, the second time was a complete disaster. Some of the wax dripped from the candle into my ear. My inner ear was burnt, I temporarily lost my hearing and my ear canal was blocked by the candle wax. I had to go to a specialist who had to remove the hardened wax (and by remove I mean scrap it off my burnt ear drum).

After the whole situation, I did a little research and noticed that ear candles are actually very dangerous and somewhat illegal. They can cause way more damage than I experienced (i.e. perforated eardrums, permanent loss of hearing, etc..). AND to top it all off there was a study that examined the guck that the candles "expelled" from the ear and it most cases the stuff is just wax and particals from the candle. Geesh!

Anyways, have you tried them? What are your thoughts about them? What experiences have you had?

OH and I want to clarify that I did not do this myself I had someone administer the treatment!!

Yes, several times. My husband and I do this for each other. You have to cut out a hole of a paper plate or what we use, a foil pie plate. Lie on your side, place the end of the candle inside of your ear canal . The other person will then light the candle and then watch to make sure the candle is upright at all times. When it is at about 1 inch from the end take it out slowly and cut it with scissors right above the flame. You can cut open the bottom to see how much yeast and wax that has been extracted from the ear from the treatment. My husband swears by it. When his ears start to itch, he wants to have the treatment.

they do work - but you need to have someone administer the treatment - as you found out, it's not a DIY endeavor .....ouch....... try hydogen per oxide .......dump it in your ear and q-tip after several minutes.......

It's safer to have someone else light them and to lay partly on your side. Better luck next time. But yes they work.

I've tried them once and they didn't do a thing, so I assume we did it wrong as I've heard others say they'e fantastic...

My friends and I did this a couple of times. I thought it worked okay, 1 of my friends, thought it ruined her hearing. We managed to burn a tiny bit of carpet & their blanket...that was with 4 people there, can't imagine doing it yourself.

Yes. They mean the warning on the label that describes it as a two-man job. I (of course) ignored it and lit the side of my face on fire. No joke.
