    My husband speaks English as a second language and he's very good but the hardest part for him is distinguishing between words that sound similar but aren't, and have different meanings, like "holy" versus "holly".

    grammar and spelling and pronounciation !! i learned english from movies i rarely speak english with anyone like verbally :P

    spelling, but then I realized that there where not any universal spelling rules and ceased to give a f about it

    There are more rules than it looks like at first... working out which words are Germanic and which ones are from French or Latin is useful to start with. But when you see how crap a lot of English speakers are at spelling, it's probably not something to worry about too much!
