When I didn't have health insurance, the food was horrid and the beds were like prison beds. When I did have health insurance, we had amazing meals and hospital beds that you could control by a remote.

I visited my wife while she was there instructing the staff on healthy foods to have in the patient kitchen. She believes strongly in the link between good nutrition and mood and mental health. I was impressed because they had regular food like somebody would have at their home. Patients who were up for it could make things in the kitchen in the ward.

I don't remember the food. I just remember that we had a big kitchen and if I could talk one of the orderlies into sitting with me, I could go in and bake pies, cakes even bread. All I had to do was make a list of what ingredients were needed, and they would get them in, then when I could get an orderly, I could bake. It was often the bed time snack for the whole ward.

I like that narrative! It reminds me of a joke some psych nurse told me and some others. She said "Do you know the difference between us and you? We have the keys!" Laughs all around. She was a great lady.

Well, you must be crazy. Institutional cuisine is by its nature always of the lowest quality. Cheap & plentiful. Bleeck!!!

We got food from this one place that I've never heard of that's supposed to be known for its good food, but the breakfast stuff gave me stomach aches. The waffles tasted like cardboard. It was just gross.

I've been in several and it depends on the individual ward. The worst food was not even that bad .But the weirdest thing was a small psyche ward where they had like a really good chef making stuff like crepes and waffles and omelets for breakfast and for dinner freshly made lasagna , spaghetti , Chefs Salads etc.. The variety was amazing and the food was better than most restaurants .
