If you're caught in the surf rip and driven down, draw your body into a ball. Full length you're pushed down, In a ball you will go to the surface. Don't panic.

You will be driven toward shore or into deeper water in which you can surface and swim parallel to the beach until the large wave (generally the 9th) can help surf you in.

    Stay relaxed and don't panic.

Do waves realy come in a certain numeric pattern ? I first heard about it many years ago when I read a book called 'The Seventh Wave "

It may or may not be true. As kids we believed it (perhaps we learned it from adults) but it seemed to be true. You're right, it's seventh not ninth. I walk on the beach down here in Peru, and don't get more than knee deep in the water. There clarity is not much and there are critters... Just kidding, the water is great and the seventh always seems bigger. It's just hard to pick out where to start counting sometimes.
