I wonder if people really believe you just forgot about it, it's embarrassing to have to ask for it back.

    No shlit, Shakespeare,

Neither a borrower nor a lender be,
For both the loan and lender are oft lost,
While borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all, To thine own self be true.
And it must follow, as the night, the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man

Very true! Have you ever lent money to somebody who then goes out of their way to avoid you? "... both the loan and lender are oft lost..."

Oh my goodness yes, my computer. When my sister's computer broke and I was the only one in the house with a computer, she "borrowed" it without asking for hours (even days once) at a time. It got to the point where I had to ask our mom to get it back for me because I was scared to ask, I hid it from her when I got it back, and took it with me when I left the house a couple of times. I wouldn't mind sharing when I didn't need it anyway or I wasn't even home. But it was ridiculous that she would get screaming matches with me and our mom over it, like it was also hers. I paid for that computer and the security software on it with my own money, and I never said "You can borrow it without asking for as long as you want"

I just drove over to his place opened the garage and started loading up my stuff. His neighbors wanted to do the same. "He has my things too". Tough ***, I wasn't about to let the neighbors have a free for all.

In my circle there are a few people to whom I can lend anything, they clean it and give it back as soon as possible. But what annoys me especially is that the single women in my aquaintance feel free to borrow the husbands of the others when they want some work done! My husband was recently in the clutches of a new neighbour who bought a lot of stuff from IKEA, who wanted her miniature garden dug up, and then some. Because my daughter had met her before (the woman has an adorable dog for which my daughter totally fell), my poor softhearted husband knew all about her terrible migraines and back pains and divorce and everything, so he felt he couldn't say no. Now, enough is enough! She was monopolizing him and I didn't want to have to borrow him back.

It's called "permanently borrowing". And yes, I know not to loan stuff to one of my friends, because they never give it back. That's funny, borrow it back?
