The interpretation of past events in society and the understanding of the historical process, which is very important for understanding the present social dynamics as well as to avoid repeating the historical mistakes of the past.
It has been said that "the conquerors write the history". We simply do not know at this time, nor do we have the means to know, absolutely without a doubt all facts. While it is true that we can carbon date petroglyphs and they strongly resemble humans in space suits, we can't prove that it means anything. Religion has been distorted repeatedly even in the modern age where proof of the tampering is available for view. The scope of history in a knowledgeable society is this: We don't know what we like to think we know about many things; we need to be open to the possibility that we are wrong about much of what we think we know. Someday we might have the technology to go back in time in the physical sense and view history, but even then we probably would not understand much of the "why" of what we would see. History is questionable, at best.
