The Simpsons brought in the idea of humorous adult oriented cartoons. Southpark pushed the limits on obscenity and family guy is awesome but it's basically the Simpsons with more vulgar content. The Simpsons are king.

They are all cartoons with real voices, why the big fuss about cartoon characters. I had my son stop watching cartoons when he became 15. He started believing and acting like the cartoon characters.
