Resolved Question

For agnostics/atheists... Help me out here in explaining this question that came up in my last posting..?

... Hey thanks for all the posts - no matter which side - in my question:

http://www.experienceproject.com/question-answer/How-Creationists-Explain-Dinosaurs-And-How-They-Can-Explain-The-Last-Scientific-Found-This-Week-Ida-Is-Here/14022

From 'LaBrujaha' ...

"
have to comment: I find it interesting that those who have liberated themselves from religious dogma spend an awful lot of time showing it two fingers.

Humanity has a need to believe in something -- even if it's only natural selection! "

I totally agree with the last phrase and therefore that's why we created God.

But I confess I have spent a lot of time myself thinking about the first part and I can only say with my honest feeling that all turns to Power.

Look around you and you will see that even when you free yourself from religion dogma you can not be free of it in all aspects of your life. It dictates who you can marry for instance right now and it may dictate what is taught in schools ... some people would love to see science replace by creationism in class. And gay marriage opponents have no other argument to justify holding civil rights to a group than their faith that Bible said it is wrong.

Not much freedom from religion right?

I hope other agnostics here can explain better why we spend some time discussing religion matter but that's my vision of it. We are all involved in a battle for power, even if we don't even realize it.

Any agnostic/atheist have a better example on why we spend so much time showing two fingers? ( although I wouldn't call questioning showing two fingers!)

Keep it gentle, if possible.
ps: one last thing... keep in mind also that agnostic and atheist have some differences and each one have their own purpose with questions. Agnostics doubts the existence but do not proclaim they are sure of anything, atheists are quite sure of their beliefs ( or rather the lack of it).

I would happily leave all of the faithheads alone if it weren't for the fact that their irrational and faith-based beliefs (as opposed to rational beliefs based on evidence) are fueling the wrong side of the debate on issues which affect all of us. Here's a list of 6 of those issues:

outlawing abortion,
opposition to birth control,
abstinence-only sex ed,
opposing stem cell research,
teaching creationism in public schools,
denying homosexuals the right to marry

I would leave them alone to believe in whatever they want if they would keep their beliefs out of public policy. If they insist on invading and making our secular government enforce religious policies, the least I can do is take the time to tell them how stupid they are.

If religions had their way, we would still think the Earth was flat and that the sun and stars orbited us and that the planet was 6,000 years old. The fact that some people still subscribe to some of these ideas even today tells you how badly religious dogma slows scientific knowledge.

You're born. You're taught things. That's a chair, that colour is black, say please and thank you, Santa Claus brings you presents, the tooth fairy left you that money in exchange for your tooth. Oh and there's some big guy with a beard who watches you. He's kind and good if you are, but you better not misbehave or he won't let you past his gates and send you to a place where a horned baddie will burn you forever.

You grow up. You know what things are, how to behave and what truths and lies are. There's no tooth fairy or Santa Claus. You're an adult now and you'll tell your kids that too probably.
But you know-you just do- that the guy in the sky is still watching you because it's wrong to think otherwise.

Then you read Dawkins, "The God Delusion" and feel really, really stupid. And sad. And angry. You've been manipulated and controlled and been told that if you don't believe, it makes you a bad person- and it's just not true.
These "holy" people have been on a massive power trip for too long, but thankfully the tides are turning. (Check out what's happening in Ireland).
That's why I stick two fingers up to religion. I do not need to believe in sky fairies to be a good person. And my daughter is far too bright to be told that something that is unprovable is judging her.

I agree with Qaz, who cares really ? You believe what you like and I believe what I like. I see the point of not wanting laws written in for the sake of one belief, I don't believe because a Muslim doesn't eat pork that jello should be wiped from from school cafeterias. Eh, but man this does get beat up so much around here. I don't care what someone believes as long as they treat me with respect.

The problem comes from absolutes and convictions (remember a certain politician who recently used the latter term "religiously"?). Atheists are no better. On what grounds do they "know" anything about God?

Even with science, there are no absolutes. We base our "knowledge" on the latest and greatest evidence, but we continually strive forward, searching for more evidence, more knowledge. Science is designed to reject absolutes, religious dogma is designed to protect them.

Atheism is a form of dogma. It deals in absolutes. Agnosticism deals in some netherworld of uncertainty - waiting for clarity. Some may find that ignosticism is the better choice. It is based on the concept that all positions regarding religion assume too much about the concept of God and related theological ideas. If we can even form a legitimate question about the existence of God, then the term "God" is meaningless and unworthy of debate.
