I think a little bit of both. but being fashionable is relative. what is fashionable to one may not be to another. but appearing fashionable gets attraction and depending on said fashion can elevate perceived status or be an ob<x>ject of derision thus negating status.

What's fashionable is debatable , if we are talking about following trends that's all about insecurity .
It is about a desire to conform and be an accepted memeber of the group.
Status because fashion changes all the time and people are attracted to status or more importantly power.
