I've been to India so let me give you a little heads up:-
The taste really depends on what region's food you're trying out. If you're used to bland food then you will find Indian food extremely spicy. They use a lot of spices when they're cooking. It's a mixture of different kinds of flavours. Personally, I really like Indian food. The texture and flavours are really good and you'll enjoy it but some of their foodstuff's are an acquired taste. If you want to check out how it looks you should look up some of their stuff online. I didn't quite get the last part of your question, but if you have anything you want to ask me you can scribble on my board or message me =)

Not all spicy though-went to Indian for the first time ever about 18months ago and liked it-and i dont like real hot spicy food either. Cant even remember what i ate-but there is a yogurt type of drink that cools some of the spiciness down. Try it.

well, here's an idea... get out your phone directory or search on the internet for some indian restaurants in your area and go in, ask what they recommend and sample some of it and see what you think!!

I'm with ShadowofDoubt on this one! I also like the creamed spinach with cheese cubes for a vegetable dish.

Shadowofdoubt: did you mean TANDORI chicken? It's great , not spicy or too foreign, but it is different. Tikka masala would be the spicy sauce one slathers on, and can be applied to anything, including chicken.
Joule: I think genet meant "curry". Some foods have it, some don't. You totally nailed it by saying the food is variegated depending on region. Some is strictly vegetarian using familiar ingredients like onion, potato, cauliflower, green beans, milk curd, yogurt and as Marge was told by the Nahsapeemapetilans when she and Homer ate over : "this is chick peas, this is lentils, THIS is chick peas AND lentils, and THIS is lentils and chick peas." Yogurt cuts the hot out of what can be scorching. My Indian neighbor offered me a breaded, fried habanero pepper which surely must have been invented as a torture!

Shoreboy: AND creamed spinach, I forgot, but I think the "cheese cube" was milk curd. Cheese would have melted and blended in unrecognizably. Peas are used, too, and dahl a sort of split pea made into soup.
Other areas eat meat such as lamb, beef, and goat served in tasty sauces, not to mention regional sausages. Samosas are great, too.
Meteorite was it a "lassi"? Try a bhang [marijuana] lassi!
BlackHoleSun: YOU? AGAIN?? If you like mango chutney, try pickled mangoes which come in at least four flavor varieties and, OK it's Jamaican, mango kutchela tops my list of taste ticklers using mango. Try a mango lassi for sweet drink, and OH, don't forget gulab jamun, which is diabetes in a ball: it's deep fried dougnut holes which are then saturated, soaked, overcome and served in thick sugar supersatuated [water] syrup. Oh man........
In short [that WASN'T short!]: there's a lot from which to choose. A do-it-yourselfer could get a cookbook like "The Hare Krishna Cookbook" and not run out of new recipes for a year!
