Has anyone actually escaped the rat race?

I would love to give up my mundane 9-5 office job from which I get no satisfaction and would like to run away to another country and do something worthwhile that helps people, animals or communities. I feel I would get so much more out of life that I currently do. I know I am not alone - is anyone thinking along the same lines or has managed to do it?

I know a person who has a job here with a nonprofit but every few months (not exactly sure how many) she goes to South Africa to work in an AIDS clinic and also does HIV/AIDS awareness work....so it is possible to escape the rat race.

Mostly, I live and work in Wyoming. I work hard and make $7.50/hour but have a job that is like all others and I could just walk away if I so desire. I owe far to much in student loans to ever pay them back and after cancer my medical bills and lack of employment for a year have all but destroyed me financially. Therefore, I refuse to run a race that I can not win.

I am planing to escape the rat race Next Year,I am thinking of buying a campervan, and go travelling,I will be getting about £7,000 from a pension,I only work part time now,I am aged 59,The money won't last forever,so I would find some work for cash payments when I travel around.
This will be a huge gamble but life is a gamble anyway. There are a lot of places that I have never been to that I would love to see,and this could be the chance to do it while I still can.

It is possible, but a lot of it depends on your definition of rat race. YeaOhYea's story illustrates a good view of it.

As to your love of animals. If you ran away and did something to help rats; well, that would be awkward.

I escaped the "rat race" by enlisting into the military, doing my 20, and retiring. It was and still is a good plan that many are benefiting from. I enlisted when I was 17. I get pension and free medical. I encourage people to enlist.
