Would I responsible for paying for medical care. If they aren't an adopted child, how could I pit them on my insurance. I'm also curious about how long children generally stay. I'm worried about getting too attached and then having to say goodbye. Would you say it's been a positive experience?

depends on your country does it. I'm in New Zealand. Children can stay for however long you sign up for, short term, long term, life placements, respite care, emergency care. As for saying goodbye...you have to have your head in the right space..keeping in mind all the time that they;re not yours and they'll eventually leave...sometimes circumstances take all of that out of your hands. As for a positive experience, sometimes it can be hell, sometimes it can be wonderful. It's definately a journey...and a learning experience.
