A few folks have tried that on me. But, they way I dealt with it was more along the lines of interactive entertainment. I would engage them expecting no real substance behind it.
I assume that everyone I am contacted by is not real (from the onset of corresponding with them).
Some may actually be real people with legitimate and sincere storylines.

Sort of but nothing too serious. I met up with a guy I met on a dating site for coffee and he had sent a pic of him at least 20 years younger. I was in my early 30's he was easily in his 60s,

I was reverse catfished. I met someone online and we went on a few dates. Although his pictures were real he gave me a fake name and fake identity. Probably had a wife or girlfriend stashed somewhere.

In sense, yes. We talked for a whole year and then told me I was like pen pal without the pen.
You don't tell some you care about them and among other things. Let's just say, I learned my lesson!
