Yes, only in Saudi Arabia. I've been to many countries, but it was by far the most different in customs, dress, and language. You have to make sure you don't raise the soles of your feet towards an Arabian, never shake with the left hand, etc.

Culture shock occurs when you find very little to relate to when immersed in another culture different from your own.

The one commonality I'd seen was that rural people were more friendly and open than city dwellers.

yea, when I went to mexico when I was 8. I was a spoiled brat, cry baby oh my goodness punch that girl bad. My mom NEVER EVER cooked for me when I was young.. honestly. I would eat cereal, junk food, or MCDONALDS.

So, Mexico without my mother , was like hell. lol I had to eat cooked food, it was disgusting .. I didn't speak spanish. I had to shower with roaches. I was allowed to go wherever I wanted and no one told me no. There were children running amuck everywhere. The streets smelled like urine. The city was dead around 1-3 o'clock like a city nap time, called siesta. and at night the neighborhood got together in streets and just played music and barbecued for everyone and passed around beer. Everyone was VERY FRIENDLY AND HUMBLE.
I lost like 20 pounds in 2 weeks. I was an obese child.

I went to lebanon, and I was expecting a backward terrorist country with women covered from heard to toe next to their camel desert-wandering men. Turned out to be like heaven on earth, with warm hearted people and a fashion show down their streets every day. They dance in circles and smoke shisha and drink coffee 24/7.Culture shock!

I used to work in the Eastern bloc and then lived in Budapest, Hungary. I think it's easier for immigrants to adjust to Canada than Canadians to adjust elsewhere. We're still spoiled here. And yeah, parts of Africa definitely seem like another planet.

I have had culture shock without ever leaving my own country. People and communities can differ greatly.

Yes, however, for all the places I have been, farmers seem universally the same. When with them, language aside, I knew the people, I understood, city folks were a whole other story. Don't even understand them in my own country.

just one million times, but i will tell a couple of things about the country i am in now:

- stray dogs everywhere and some of them are very angry

- as the country is getting richer and people can afford new cars, they just abandon their old cars on the streets, usually on the sidewalk. nobody bothers to remove the cars, so they just rotten right there on the sidewalk

- people drive in both directions on one-way streets

- if you are a rich kid and do not want to go to school, you father will bribe the school director and eventually the university dean, so that you can stay at home and get your diploma anyway
