I worked for an engineering company a few years back.
I was in the grinding section when another guy had a wheel 'dig in' on a job and the wheel shattered.
I felt and heard something whizz past my right ear and then there was a loud clang and a splashing sound in the coolant tank of another machine.
I went to see what had made the splash and it was around a quarter of a 450mm diameter by 60mm wide grinding wheel and it had missed my head by probably less than 50mm.
The fragment would have been travelling at around 100 kilometres an hour when it went past me.
Is that close enough for you?

I walked across the street once, a car came super close to hitting me, and although there was plenty of room on that street, and no other cars were coming or going, that person behind the wheel purposely drove within less than a inch to hitting me and knocking me down.

I've had 'far misses'. No air, though.
