Yes, I saved a kid from a strong river current once, as he went round and round in circles becoming exhausted.
Also, while MCing a Toastmasters meeting, I assured the crowd that they would be enthralled by the next speaker. They were, for 3 minutes into his speech, the speaker dropped dead! I applied CPR to good effect and he came round quite quickly, only to have his breathing and heart stop again soon after. I kept him going until the ambulance arrived, and he actually died twice on the way to the Hospital. He did survive however, with the only real ill effect being a pacemaker.
Many said I was a hero, but really, I was just angry that amongst all those people I was the only one that knew what to do.
    Learn CPR! Please!

I brought a girl back using CPR.

I swam in and pulled a boy out.

I faced down three men with knives barehanded, to keep their blades from an innocent back.

I walked out of the room.

Yes. Some of the memories aren't that kind, but yes. Yes I have.

Perhaps... A kind word can change someone's day drastically. You never know when someone needs to hear a kind word.

There is no feeling like it on earth. As a nurse, it is part of my job. Whether for better or worse, I have saved many people's lives....Sometimes I just know someone is going to "crash" or "code"; other times, it happens with no warning...

Yes, I was 14 and my little sister was having her 7th birthday. One of the little rascals slipped out from under her mother's eyes. Someone had forgotten to lock the gate of the swimming pool. I was a distance away but saw a little pink ball tumbling into the deep end. I ran to the pool and dived in. The poor thing had already swallowed a bunch of water but we got her out safe and sound.

One time my dad was having a particular bad bout of morbid depression and he wanted to shoot my mom and little sister. I went to stand infront of the gun and begged him not to do it. Untill this day I don't know the reason why he didn't do it and if maybe I influenced his decision, but I know there was a higher power at work that day and ever since.

To save someones life should not the benefit here. saving someones life is something we do without thinking about it The fact that we do save peoples lives by making them better. I we do unselfish things. People around us see this. and many times they try and duplicate. As long as they know someone cares. Then they are more willing to seek help. There are many ways to save someone. We just have to take the time to notice. A kind jesture is all it takes in a lot of cases. Many times we never know what we have accomplished. We find out many years later that we helped change someones life for the better.

I do think so. A few years ago, I knew a family with 2 little boys one was 7 ans one was 15. The one of 7 was always at my place to eat, to play with my daughter, he would even enter my home by infraction a few times. Those kids were basically not cared for at all by their darn mother. The father was abusive physicaly. After calling child services 4 times they never took the kids away. Even after visiting and seeing what those kids lived!

I was a building manager in that building where they lived (after the mother seperated from the hubby). Since they had never payed a rent fully the landlord brought them to court (wich they never even showed up) he got them evicted. 3 weeks had passed and the mother had disapeared in thin air leaving the kids home, yet no child services came and got them. She came back and announced to everyone they were moving to another city with a man she had met on internet.

I saw the eldest coming home and crying. He had speach problem and was following a special program at school for that and the new school had no program. He worked and always had to fend for himself since a young age ( I had learned ) . It's with his earned money that he bought winter boots for his brother while he was walking around in the snow with running shoes tapped together (soon after that I kind of forced his mom to buy him a pair. Anyhow It broke my heart and I went upstairs to suggest that I could take him for the 4 months that where left of school and she turned around and said go get your stuff! Imagine that, not even thinking about it there just gave him away like that!

What REALLY broke my heart after that (and still does today) Is that his little brother wanted to come live with me too. It wasn't possible 1st cause I couldn't afford it financialy, I was out of work at the time and on assurance-Chomage (sorry dont know the english term) 2nd Cause the city where they we're moving too was 3-4 hour drive and I didn't even have a car. Since this kid was really young and close to his mother still it wouldn't of been wise I thought.

The one I took in had changed so much while he was in my home, simple ground rules I had provided him wich never were. Things like taking a shower everyday not only once in a while (boys smelled so foul all the time) Clean clothes to go to school, budgeting money, having decent food and also living in a clean environment.
Today the eldest named 'C' has finished high school in a normal school, he works and studies at university to become a forensic pathologist. His life is going on the right track. Sadly his bro E now 10 takes drugs, breaks things, runs away (he used to run off a lot and she wouldnt notice till late at night) and is now followed by child services! It's like they had to wait ti'll it was almost too late to intervene!

So I think I did save C but not E and it grudges at me that she has another baby!

    This kid

I don't think I've ever been responsible for saving someone's life in the sense of preventing them from dying, but I did prevent an Airman I was in charge of from getting a dishonorable discharge which would have made it extremely hard for him to lead a "life" in the civilian world. He was a good kid who made one mistake and while I wasn't going to shield him from all the punishment, I was not about to let him get discharged for it, and it worked. I don't think he reenlisted, but at least I was willing to stand up for him and give him a chance no one else was willing to give him.

Yes, several times. Now don't get me wrong and I am not boasting, I am a firefighter and it is my job. What I wanted to add to the question of the day was one or two of the most memorable. First time I ever saved some one was as a lifeguard at a boy scout camp and while we had a camper pass out while swimming. I was able to dive in and carry him back to the dock. two other life guards pulled him out and then I cleared his airway and got him breathing again. That was the first time. The other most memorable was while working we had a man get hit by a car and was hurt VERY badly. Long story short we assumed if he lived he had over a year of rehab to get back on his feet. Well, about 3 or 4 months later a man WALKED into our station(with crutches) and said he wanted to thank the men and women that saved his life. We were shocked to see him upright and were very happy for him.

Yes, used to work in a home with adults with profound physical and learning disabilities, some had epilepsy. Many times I have given stesolid (rectal diazepam) to control a seizure. Also gave Heimlich maneuver to one of the residents, He used to steel food from the kitchen and on one occasion he stole a donut lol and then rammed half of it in his mouth in one go, choking, going blue in face, me slapping his back not working. Heimlich maneuver worked and the food in the kitchen was safe for quite some time lol :o)

One never knows humility until they've taken full responsibility for a life other than their own. Even more so when the cared for has profound disabilities.

    Yes.

My 2 flatmates and I were coming back across the bridge from a cycling trip and we heard a noise, looked over the wall and there was a guy, clinging desperately to the rock at the side of the river. We threw him a life ring and held onto him until the police and ambulance arrived, and they got him out to safety by slowly bringing him over to a spot where they could pull him to safety. We didn't jump in or move him because the current was really strong and we knew it was better to wait for the authorities.

Met him up in the hospital and he was a nice guy but he had been absolutely off his face drunk and fell in. Or maybe he tried to commit suicide, I was never 100% convinced. Anyway, not so sensational as jumping in front of a car but we felt we had done good. And how did we celebrate pulling a guy who had fallen into a river while off his head drunk?......You guessed it. Lol
