I think Bikram is basically a cult. Lol. I have two family members who are instructors and paid something like 17 grand to get certified. Its yoga. It's hot yoga. It has 26 poses. Most of the people who swear by it either a) had fantastic results because it's the first real exercise regimen they stuck with so just about anything would have worked the same or b) love because they're already in pretty good shape and are pretty good at it, aka selection bias. One of the main benefits they always talk about is "removing the toxins" with all the sweating....I have yet to find anyone who can explain to me the biological process by which that happens. That system of the body is incredibly inefficient at toxin removal...most toxins are removed by breathing and normal excretory system function. Mostly they just get dehydrated and try to balance that with lots of coconut water. Lol. It's a belief system, and Mr. Bikram is a sheister. A very rich sheister though. Don't even get me started on the cleansing and juicing nonsense that goes hand in hand with it. : )

So true! It is like the liver cleansing diet... all a gimmick. The liver cleanses itself. I do enjoy yoga, but mainly power flow in a room heated to 30 degrees, which is plenty hot enough. I actually have 2 big zits now & I swear it is from being in that stinky hot room for 90mins... I de-tox every day by drinking plenty of water & eating raw food. No need to work out in a sauna!

I agree. : ) I'm a strength & conditioning coach and they always rag on me for not "really" being about fitness. I try and try to explain to them that while yoga is fantastic for developing long-term flexibility and static strength, my athletes actually MOVE! lol. You can't develop explosive power sitting in poses. I don't hate on yoga, I do it myself twice a week, and in some of the poses I completely suck...but I suck at them because if I got BETTER at them, I would lose strength and power in other ways. I'm almost 40 and I can still dunk a basketball and throw an 85mph fastball and run a 20 minute 5k. I'm not willing to give up those abilities so I can sit on one foot in a pose that gives me an inadvertent ***** or touch my toes backwards. ; )

I've tried "hot yoga", and while I like it, I don't think most people understand you are suppose to be bathed before you come in. The funk coming off some people is overwhelming.
