well part of performance art is acting. You are expressing a mood, dialogue and a setting through your performance. The character in this case is yourself and it may be taken from a direct point in your past, but it is a character nevertheless. <br />

Mind you, while you can not escape the nature of acting from a performance piece, you can however distance the piece itself from a play by taking time to explore what a play is and what it is not. For example a play has almost no audience participation; a play tends to have a story and thus a set structure, a play has a stage and a set area within which to perform. <br />

So my advice is to look at how your piece differs from a play and then emphasize those differences.
