Resolved Question

Help on a novel?

I am currently working on a story called double dice but I don't know how to start off the story. I know its about these kids who play with these dices but how should the game be played what are the rules of the game. If you could give me a brief description of how to start it off that would be great.

I guess there are a few questions you need to ask yourself first.

Have you outlined your novel?
Have you outlined your characters.
Why is the dice game important.

It would help you immensely to do a little leg work first before you start to write, and it will help you in the long run. Google, "How to write a novel" it will give you a lot of good ideas on how to get started and how to finish.

Good Luck.

Use the "Homer" beganing (Troy, not Simpson) start in the middle. Have the first part be someone explaining the game to someone else while the game is going on. Of course, the fun thing to do his have one person telling the other HOW IT SHOULD BE PLAYED TO WIN, while the other is playing entirely wrong, yet WINNING. This gives you a chance to explain the game while descibing the people involved ("Troy rolled a six, and seemed to know what to do with it, which REALLY surprised me, since I didn't even think he could count that high.") (Oh, here's a little trick: don't give all the facts, and don't desribe in detail. You'd be amazed how many things the reader will put in themselves, and want to. Sometimes the ideas they have are better than yours..)

pick up a book on how to write a novel.
like ablum65 said you have to outline the book, develop the characters, and figure out what is important about the dice. good writing isn't done by just sitting down and writing. it is done by research, planning and design.
so far all you have is a vague idea...

Hun, this is your story, you should have an idea what the game is - this game is obviously important to your story - so think of a game you know and understand - yahtzee maybe? and think up a comprehensible game along those lines - remember you don't need to use numbered dice, and it doesn't need to be fun - it could be onimous!
