Hi, I'd like to know if you have been in an intensive care unit and if you were disturbed by noise?

I'm studying the use of alarms in intensive care units. There is an argument that the alarms cause a disturbance to both the patient they are for and other patients around them. If you have an experience of being in this setting, I'd be grateful to know what you think.

I do not want to know where you were treated, or what your condition was. I do not need to know anything about you, other than your opinion on your experience of the noise level around you.

Do you think the alarms should be switched off?

Thank you.

There was only one person which didn't so much disturb me as **** me off. She kept begging and crying for these pills, but she was an addict and the doctors refused. Still, she cried and pleaded and was in complete denial. She kept repeating that she was sick and she needed the pills. If I wasn't hooked up to all those damn machines I would have beat her. I really would.

I hate the noise in the ICU.
Worse than the alarms, is the other people screaming in pain.

Under an oxygen for three days... Which evidently did not block out any noise whatsoever! Other people had machines beeping and random nonsense would make noise--even at three am. I'm there to rest and get better, but it was awfully hard to do that with what seemed like constant beeping...

The alarms in Hospitals not just ICU's are disturbing.
They are over used by the staff, and, the staff don't pay attention to them enough.
Not to mention they malfunction way to much.
Instead of a loud audible alarm to annoy everyone they should have a little thing the staff carry around.
That alerts them to things.

I've been in an ICU on a few occasions, most recently earlier this year. I have no recollection of noise presenting any problems, but I suspect that has a lot to do with the morphine and other drugs that make my memory of being in the hospital generally a little hazy.
