Home owner's insurance cancellation?

We had a storm here that was declared a Federal Emergency...FEMA came and did squat.

That being said, my home and garage lost both roofs, down to plywood, everything in my garage was destroyed. My homeowners insurance would not pay the company I chose to repair it. I ended up having to file a complaint with the state Insurance Comissioner and having an attorney write a threatening letter. They finally paid 3 months later. (this happened within a few months of my husband dying, they were pretty cold.
)
Now here we are, time for renewal and I get two months notice that they are not going to renew.

Any recourse for me? I'm thinking not, as the insurance compaines seem to have a nice racket going on. You pay for years for a service and God forbid you need to actually use this service.

Unfortunately until the Obama administration gets around to the insurance industry you are kind of stuck. You can obtain insurance through another provider. Make sure you take tons of pictures of everything in your house, the house itself, the grounds, etc. Make sure you have a current land survey completed (at least since the storm). Once you have all those things in hand get new insurance. Don't hesitate to file complaints with the Better Business Bureau, the state Insurance Commission, your state and federal congresspersons, your state and federal Senator. Mention the company by name in as many blogs, websites, etc. telling how they treated you. other than that... I know it sucks, but the laws protect the insurance industry right now... not the citizenry.

We have owned our house for 5 1/2 yrs. and had to use our homeowner's ins. 3 x, I believe, due to bad piping that has since been replaaced. That said, I am so sorry to hear of all your awful luck! I am in no sense a lawyer, tho, so I cannot tell you wether or not you have a leg to stand on. Best of luck thoughm, and know that my prayers are with you. Have faith!

Get in touch with your state insurance commissioner's office. Every state has different laws.
