How can vampires have no souls?

Vampires having no souls? Ridiculous, even shoes have souls!

depends on the mythos but... since you seem to be following the one that has vampires as turned creatures...
When they are 'turned' the essential 'soul' is lost to where ever. They become creatures of the night. They retain their thoughts and abilites (as well as gaining new ones).
They are UN-dead.
unlike a zombie which is truly dead... just animated. kinda like a puppet.

Because they get their energy completely from physical means (IE blood). As long as they have blood they can stay alive.

This is not contradictory to the Bible. The Bible says we have two natures: our flesh and our spiritual(soul). MOST people ignore their soul and live souly (pun intended- yeah I am a dork)- by their flesh. Vampires are no different except the key to their flesh is blood.

To those of you who hate my answer because I mention the Bible- come on people, the Bible is merely common sense- it gives you the foundation for understanding the essence of life. It is obvious that some people thrive on the qualities of the flesh and others thrive on the qualities of their personality (soul). Even if you are not religious in any sense of the word, this is common sense.

too many different myths to believe in, since none of them are real. Even what a "soul" is varies from person to person. You have to define it though, before you can even say who has one though. But for hypothetical's sake... Vampires, zombies and humans, all have something which animates them. But it can't be called "life" because two out of three are "dead" by modern standards.

Zombies seem to lack any sense of intelligence or emotion, and one theory says that's because they are brain-dead. Seeing as our brain seperates us from pure dumb instinct and survival without any nuance, it's a good theory. Zombies most resemble some savage and unintelligent form of animal.

Human's are very driven by emotions, and fleeting thoughts, but that could be just a quirk of our species. Since we are humans, we tend to be a bit biased when comparing ourselves to other species (fictional or not). We understand humans better than any other creature, but that doesn't mean human's have more "soul" than any other creature. However, we are alive (beating hearts, and warm blooded) so maybe that's what makes us different than either vampires or zombies.

Vampires, seem to be neither alive (unlike humans) or brain dead (unlike zombies). They are more effected by death, since they've been changed by it to become some other species. They have different abilities due to this, but the change seems to have left them more harsh and animalistic. Humans can get that way, but modernly we're more influenced to be civilized about our desires.

There's enough reason to suggest that vampires may also be socialized by their peers, only in this case to a harsher outcome. If you wanted to get interesting, you could suggest that their society is younger than ours (since human's came first) and that eventually they too could become more civilized as time progresses.

However, the point is, vampires seem to have some control and range (from savage to civilized) that they can be. So it's not perhaps, any more in their nature to be savage, than it is in any meat-eating human's nature to be savage. Which makes humans and vampires very much alike.

Perhaps the main differences between vampires and humans lies in a few abilities (differences in the five senses, light tolerance, body temperature, diet, and minimally in anatomy), and their very different cultures. And the fact humans are real and vampires aren't. What do you think?

Well, putting aside the fact that they don't exist, I don't believe vampires have no soul.

I tend to subscribe to the recent view that vampirism is like a virus or genetic defect. If it's a disease, then it simply alters the body chemistry of a normal human so it can survive and be transmitted. If it's genetic, then a vampire is simply an offshoot of the human species. In either case, it means a vampire still has a soul, because it's still, in essence, human.

I don't think that traditionally, a reason is given - the reason they are assumed to have no soul is that they don't cause any reflection in a mirror, water, etc -the reflected image is by common folklore the soul - or the expression of the soul -- I think the next logical step would be to say they have none.

Lots of people no something about vampires. A vampire when they turn a victim instead of just killing them, take them to the point of death and than shares their blood with them. The soul of the person is taken out of the body and the spirit of a demon takes its place. In the exchange it gets all the memories of the old soul. Demons do not have a soul per say, so the person is souless. In some mythos of the legend it is said that when the vampire is destroyed the soul of the victim is released from the torturous place it is being held in.

I guess because they are technically dead they don't need it. They walk and talk because of the blood they consume, possibly.

To become a vampire (according to myth) you need to die first. When you die, your soul departs and floats off to heaven, hell or purgatory (again according to myth, lol). Then you are undead, soul-less, cursed to roam the earth and feed on blood yada yada yada....
