As an example, 'What did you get your boyfriend/girlfriend or spouse for their Birthday this year?' That at least then gives you the chance to 'go around the table' and ask for a response from everyone. You then can indicate your availability by saying "I'm just curious because my sister/brother is looking for ideas and since I'm single I didn't have a good example to give her/him."
