There is no such thing as a static economy or government. They are every bit as dynamic and constantly evolving as any living thing on the planet and, as always, survival takes precedence over maintaining any status quo. You can nurture and cultivate free markets as best you can because they usually work, but when they don't it is contrary to survival to insist on using them.
The issue then is how to maintain flexibility without losing control altogether and that has always depended upon the technology available at the time and the cultural will to use the available technology.
