How can you tell if you are having a panic attack or when something is really wrong and you SHOULD be afraid?

if you are having a panic attack, it usualy feels worse than when something is really wrong... if your heart starts pounding in your chest, you can hardle breath, and the room is spinning, its prolly a panic attack. just try and take a few calming breaths. if it doesnt go away after ten mins or gets worse, then there is something wrong...
hope that helps

I have gone through many panic attacks. Each time I would go to the ER becaue I felt like I was truely dying. The rapid heart rate, not being able to catch your breath, the horrible feeling of doom, total fear. Each time it was just an anxiety attack. After about 8 or 9 times I finally learned to just get through them and sure enough,I would make it through and I did'nt die like I thought I would. In my case,I was in the beginnings of PTSD,once the first flashback came out,it was still very difficult but after so many episodes,I learned to recognize, deal with them at home. After 3 and a half years of flashback and counseling,I am over the worst and pretty much in peace!!

It is very hard to know. I have had many of them and been to the hospital. At first I felt like a fool for rushing to the hospital but them my doctor told me to keep doing it because he'd rather it be a false alarm than something serious. I DID learn one thing that has sometimes helped; when it first starts to happen, I try to concentrate on breathing and relaxing my muscles - starting with my jaw muscles, neck, chest, arms, and right on down. Sometimes, if it is just a panic attack, it will subside or not get as bad. By doing them I have been able to save several trips to the hospital. Still, when in doubt, go to the hospital and don't let anybody make you feel bad about it.

Anymore, I can't really tell, so I sedate myself immediately either way.

If the world seems like an incredibly hostile place, and everybody is out to exploit you and harm you, and you are absolutely, positively certain you are going to die, you're NOT having a panic attack; you're just smart.

I dont think there is any way to tell. In an event of a pacis attack its not the panic that is the issue. Its the situation outside. and it feels so intensely problematic!

when I have a panic attack I feel just like someone is sucking the air right out of me and i cant breath, nor can I move. When u have a true panic attack you well never forget it. Mine has kept my from going into any water that well go above my knees. I never used to be afraid of water till then.
