They're overdoing it because they're trying to be girls...simple as that. They take it to the extreme

How come New Yorkers talk the way they do? How come those in the deep South talk the way they do? It's part of their regional culture. For some gay guys there's a way of talking and acting that's part of their culture. Simple as that.

Does that include the special voice? Seems to be universal...

No, I dont "know what you mean" because not all gay men talk in that way.

There are gays who feel like that's part of femme-ing up, so to speak. They're emulating girly speech-patterns because that's the gender role they want to fill in their relationships, I assume.
It's a minority though and I know a few straight people who talk effeminately as well.

To assume too much of a connection there either way ("gay men talk effeminately" or "men who talk effeminately are gay") is a dumb stereotype.

I have been to many gay bars & worked in the fashion industry, so my observation ain't dumb mate.

The fashion industry is full of flamboyancy and that's another reason for this speech pattern.. not all these men are gay though. And even if, then only because exactly the kind of femme gays I described earlier are particularly drawn to that industry. - Your gay bar experiences should have told you that this effeminate speech pattern is FAR from universal... So I'll stick to my guns on this. It is a stereotype.
