becuase we associate the team we are rooting for as an extension of ourselves ... theyr are part of our group, our pack our tribe ... and so when they destroy an opponent then we see ourselves doing the same since we are part of that group and so get our fulfillement of victory and triumph from it ... remember the Roman Empire and their gladiator games, the Mayans and their ball game, and of course animal fighting that is pretty prevalent everywhere in the world
