Yes that is very true. Especially if they have a similar experience and can relate to you. Family is weird because you are all related by blood but you don't always have the same opinions nor personalities. I think my family is a bunch of aliens!

Once you get to know people, and like them, you care what they think about you. You want them to see you in a good way, so you tend to hold back telling them things that might make them think less of you. With people you don't know, you care less what they think because their judgment or rejection has less power to hurt you.
