You've read the wrong pieces then. Keep reading.
The best is as good or better than it ever was; it's just that none of the **** stuff from the past has survived because it was **** and that makes it look like all poets and writers in the past were awesome.<br />
Personally though I refuse to read anything from before the 20th Century. I find all of the "classics" are overly wordy and generally dull to read. Personal preference though.
It's all a matter of opinion
Today's artists are rewarded more for creating songs and movies than for poems or paintings.
Well... people today have little patience for "rules" and the "structure" of poetry. I'll admit to being a "fan" of free-verse myself, but I do write in classical form from time to time. I like to think that my poetry doesn't suck entirely, and I'm recently published. I also know many "modern" poets that are amazing authors. I would direct you to the poetry, spoken-word, and music of Exene Cervenka (you can find her on youtube) for some someone "famous" to turn to. I'd be happy to chat any time, direct you to other art sites and/or poets.
Don't you fear showing your work in here has the likelihood of being stolen? I write all the time. I'm not wanting someone take my stuff claim it theirs and get the rewards.
I write what I feel. Sometimes the words only need to be set free.
completely agree with you about centry+ old poetry being far better than most published sh*t today.
the reason it was way better though is because they spoke a totally different English than we do today. they were versed in latin which today's English is nowhere near, and if anything today we speak a degraded slang in comparison.
as for modern authors...
Poetry has become very boring, rather than entertaining or fun But I think things are beginning to change.
no i cant say there is. i do write but its simply to put what i feel into words. since i am mute reading my own words kind of well purifies my feelings
