How confident are you that you could defend yourself in an assault?

Have you ever taken a self defense course, or martial arts? Do you carry personal protection like Mace? Do you simply rely on sticking to "safe" places and being aware of your surroundings?

I have actually taken martial arts for 12 years and feel very confident that I could defend myself with ease.

I don't go out at night number one. Number two I am not a small person who any one who comes at me better be ready to do battle and I don't care if they have a weapon. I am not the kind to be docile and give in at the sight of a gun or knife. I've had a gun pulled on me before and it just made me so angry that I went right up into the man's face and went slap off on him turned around and walked away. He said he was sorry. There are women who will do as they are told because they think if they cooperate they will have a better chance of living and it's just not true. That poor baby just got killed and she was doing exactly as she was told to do. The person will kill you anyway so fight I say. This is MY personal opinion and I know people who will say that they disagree but more women get killed cooperating than those who fight and that's a fact. Either way you're dead.

Hi comprehensive2 :).Attacks can-and do-happen in the day too. Not very confident. I believe what comprehensive2 says about fighting to defend yourself-instead of listening to the attacker. I reckon I would get so angry that i could defend myself. OR Id be so shocked-Id freeze. Hope I never find out-it would be horrible to be violently assaulted.

Not at all, I have been attacked and police shifted it from assault to attempted murder!

I was paralysed with fear

I am fairly confident that if I were attacked I would freeze and be unable to defend myself. I have taken Karate and few self defense classes and I am generally aware of my surronding and people around me, but I think I would still freeze. That seems to be my natural reaction to a crises.

I have NO idea what I would do if I was attacked, but I'm not confident I could fight my way out of a paper bag let alone escape from the clutches of someone intent on harming me. But you never know.

I used to carry some Mace type spray given me by the guy working for my security company when I lived in South Africa and walked alone a lot. But I don't feel the need to now I'm in England.

Against one guy, who's smaller than me, and unarmed? Yeah, I think I'd be fine.

I have never taken any martial arts neither do I carry mace. Its a good job I don't live in a very rough area because the most I could do is smack someone with my handbag.

I've been followed home on several occasions. Once a guy actually followed me from the high way with his lights turned off. After living in my area, I think anyone would end up street smart and make 'safe' choices. For example, if I'm walking to my parked car to my house (feet away) I put 911 on the phone, ready to dial with someone at the door waiting for me. I don't put my seatbelt on unless the doors are locked in the car and I've turned on the car. I never get gas at night, because gas stations are murderer and gang members' playgrounds. I don't park near vans. I always plan an escape route, or think of a weapon of choice/distractor...I could chuck a water bottle or my heavy wallet at someone's head. If this person has a gun, I'll simply run. More people who run survive then those who do not. And if it had to come down to a physical fight, I think my animalistic implosive anger will burst out and kill that mother f@*!@#. Or maybe I'm just too confident in myself.

Not confident at all. I know I cannot take on a strong man, knife or gun. We have police officers , ect and they have been killed during assaults. I think everyone should try to be street smart but know I cannot protect myself when it would come to many types of assault.
