If the hair is matted you need a comb first, a thin wire pet brush second. For short-haired cats just run a wet cloth over their coat.
Don't forget to scratch the cat's ears to help it relax.

Use a cat brush. Go from head to tail. Watch out for the belly unless your cat likes that. Don't use pressure.

I hold the brush out and my cats love to rub their faces on it themselves, instant purring. They plop on the floor and roll back n forth loving the brushing feeling, like momma's tongue from when they were kittens. Each of my 7 cats has enjoyed different kinds of brushes and brushing.

Don't over do it till your cat gets used to it.

With a small pet brush. Don't brush its legs/head/tail they hate that.
