being a recovering alcoholic and addict myself, i can tell you that the person has to want it themself. you can't do it for them.

This isn't something that you can stop. They have to want to be better for themselves. What you can do is being supportive and be there for them when they finally want to get help or when they're getting help.

that is of those million-dollar questions. i don't think you can unless they are really decided not to relapse.

Communication.

Talk to them about how it used to be or describe any awful situations that couldve been avoided if they were not using said drug. Be there for them and try to do something together you'll both enjoy. They'll have to make the descision to stop...but at least you can help.

easier stated then done,simply because you want that person to avoid drugs,but what does THAT PERSON,WANT FOR THEMSELVES,they have to WANT to stop-i no I am a recovering addicit of 19yrs,and i did program after program,probably for ever member of my family-only to return to drugs,this time I tried being clean for DOLLY(thats me)and i have remained clean,,==

You can't control another person, if that's what you are asking. "How do I avoid someone..." I'm not sure what your question is. Do you want to avoid this person or do you want him/her to avoid going back to drugs?

Save yourself a lot of grief and accept early in life that you are not responsible for what another human being chooses to do. As a friend, brother, etc., you can speak your mind, but their choices are their own.
