How do I know if he's really a good guy..or just like the rest of them?

I get too nervous and skeptical...because I've been through the crap. How do I teach myself to open up and at least see if he's really the exception, not the rule?

try to imagine yourself spending the rest of your life with this guy, would he be a good father, would he respect your desires for working, studying, travelling? do you think you both value the same things? can you have an open serious conversation with this guy or at least feel that you could if you wanted to? If you don't think you could trust this guy to protect you or back you up if you were in a dangerous or threatening situation then don't worry about him. Make yourself a reasonable list of the things you think you deserve from a relationship and go from there... If he's a good guy then his actions will speak louder than words, you don't want a guy to be full of promises and nice things to say if he never does them...you'll just end up dissatisfied and hoping he'll change.
