How do I stay motivated to run!?

I love running... it keeps me free.
And yet i find that i lack the motivation to keep doing it. And i hate that.

Any suggestions? Or just simply get off your ### and do it! :D

Hi foreverbelieving
I ran. I knees became painful after too much hill running. I am better now but frightened to damage them again. I ran a week or so again for the first time in almost a year. I turned on the power like I was driving a new car and wanted to see what it had got. It climbed through the gears and accelerated. I power ran. I did not even have to breathe. I had all the power I wanted. I could cruise flat out without a thought. I could watch myself power down. I stopped and was enthralled by what had just happened.
I remember running at night shirtless in a snow storm by moonlight. I had the sensation of movement yet silence and peace. I could see myself breathing at full stretch feeding the engine. I could see my arms and legs an trunk move. I could see the snow and the land around me.
This is how I stay motivated to run.
Keep in touch my friend?
Thank you for reminding me! I will write this as a story!

You can buy this thing from Nike and Apple where your running shoes and ipod interact and you set it to play Jimmy Eat World when you're running, and whining baby noises when you stop. For real. I think that'd be great motivation. You'd just have to find some baby noises to put on your ipod, but that wouldn't be hard eh ;)
I think the idea is to set music you don't like so much on to play when you stop running, but I think nails on a chalkboard or screaming toddler recordings would be a much more effective form of motivation..
The downside is probably the arm and the leg it costs to buy these shoes. It might make your running a bit crooked.

I run to clear my mind. I run to feel beautiful. I run bcause it gives me peace. On days I don't want to run I force myself to do 10 minutes, then if I still don't want to run, I can stop. I never do. By the time I hit 10 minutes I have fallen in love with the feeling all over again, and I don't want to stop. For me running is like water. There are subsitutes, and you can get by with them, but theres noting quite like an ice cold glass of water. There is nothing quite like a good hard run. Good luck.

i'm day dreaming while running. nothing special, always something else. i just let it go, listen to my rhythmic breathing and dream on... i only stop running when i reach finish spot, and sometimes i am frustrated i didn't finish my dream yet. (day dreaming is my way to make time pass easier when i have to wait somewhere, it's what i do before i sleep, in fact it's what i usually do :D )

I used to run late to meet a friend for a drink, and run for a half of an hour, to make it on time, with some great dance music on an ipod, then it's easy.
I walk fast now, to prevent knee problems, and wear MBT's..

Just set a certain time in your day and do it.

It will become a routine. Motivation will not be the issue.

Me, personally do not like to run.

Now if you are talking about walking, count me in.
I enjoy walking. :-)

Best of luck to you.

Your motivation should be the reason you started running and still continue to do so. Do you want to lose weight, or simply just remain healthy? Either way, you run because you're trying to achieve something--that's the motivation. I don't know about you, but when I'm not feeling up to running, I listen to some music to make the activity more enjoyable. Keep running, especially if you want to continue feeling free.

I cycle personally but I like Cedricmoms and koypath answers. My knees and ankles are too weak...

I clip in, turn my tunes up, and feel the breath coming in and out of my chest. Just as I come to the end of my ride I start thinking about how my pool is going to feel great and how I look getting in. You just get into what your doing and before you know it you start craving the excursion. Good luck with your Running!

I imagine (day dream lol) that there's a crowd of people cheering me on. I'm competitive so the thought usually gets me moving!

How competitive are you ? Time your run . Make plans as to how fast you can run the same coarse . I use to run a three mile coarse in twenty two minutes and eventually brought the time to just under thirteen minutes . This coarse had 235 steps down and one and three quarter flat with half mile up hill run. It took three months to break the eighteen min and half a year to break the fifteen .
