By covering up anything they wouldn't want someone to touch in public.

I wouldn't expect to "be respected" by dressing a certain way but there ARE ways to dress where you can expect to be disrespected.

Well, like what most people are saying, it is not necessarily what you wear. Rather, your character as a person.
To elaborate, if you look at your self in the mirror and you only focus on trying to look sexy and eye catching for all the guys out there, then the outfits you choose to wear are likely going to reflect that.
On the flip side, if your a woman of good character than chances are you could care less about such vanities as sex appeal. Instead, you might wear that sweater because it was a gift from someone significant in your life, those pants because you support the brand and feel comfortable in them, etc.
In other words, it is not so much the action, but the reasoning behind it.

I think it depends what kind of respect they're after. I can see how wearing a belt made of skulls, a cape made from some wild beast they skinned, piercings and blood-red tribal tattoos and a giant cleaver whose blade they keep licking could bring in some mad respect.
Or a pantsuit. Pantsuit would work too, I guess.

It is not about the way you dress, it is about your character. Many people dress really nice but they don't have character either.

You get respect by your attitude, not by how you dress.
