I remember doing this as a child with my father. We needed "nightcrawlers" for fishing. We would wait until it rained and go outside just after dark with a flashlight and shovels. Sometimes we would catch them on top of the earth, but most of the time we would have to stick the shovel in the ground, digging up the earth and literally pulling the worm out of the earth. My dad had a set up in one of those older styrofoam freezer coolers. He would keep them in there with dirt and periodically he would sprinkle corn meal in the soil for the worms. we would them pick out a few each time and walk down to the pier of my parent's lake home to fish.

I typically search around the yard by lifting up rocks, rolling fallen trees or anything else that hasn't been moved in some time. Or if you have a pile of leaves that hadn't been raked up in a while... that's a good place to check too.

My hubby does this in summer to catch em for fishing put some damp, flattened cardboard boxes on the grass overnight; next day, you'll have loads. Failing that, good old-fashioned dig in the ground.

Loretta was right, but you have to dump the soapy water on the ground. Worms breath through their skin, so have some water ready to rinse them off. Have a bowl full of fresh dirt ready. Make sure that the lid has SMALL holes in it for air. You can store them in the refridgerator, they will live longer that way.

Here is the recipe:
All the leaves and grass, hedge trimmings will be piled in a large bin or hole in the ground or just a place in the yard. Every day pour your scraps from the kitchen into the pile. (Meat scraps are a no no) Once a week take a cup of corn meal and some milk (if you have any milk product that goes bad save it for the worms) and pour it into the pile, mixing the leaves around. If there are no wroms around just buy a box from a sporting goods store and throw them in the pile. It will take several months but you will have all the worms you ever needed.

I look under damn earth or leaves and there they are. A garden hoe or trowel works best. I love catching them with my son to use as bait when we go fishing.
