How do you deal with the feeling of shame?

I realize that shame keeps me from connecting people.
Shame from the things people have done to me still haunt me, and make me feel bad about myself.

My own inadequacies.
And my past and the things I did wrong in my teens and twenties.

You have a lot of answers here. So, here's one more opinion. It's easy to say, "get over it," but those people don't feel your shame or pain. If you can't resolve this problem, you need to talk to a professional who understands your feelings. Feeling shame is not an unusual problem, like guilt, but you can't wish it away. You can get past this, and get a healthy dose of self esteem. Seek help, it works much faster.

I usually just say to myself "Oh well bad move" then get over it. And try to develop the 'selective-hearing-skill" because it seems like every little negative thing that people say about you puts you weigh weigh down. So its either ignore them or stick out for your self and tell em to get stuffed. Past is past babe, you gotta let go or you will always be in a rut.

Its bullshit and you need to get over it, it happened, it was a bad choice move on. You are the one making you feel bad, no one else. As far as inadequacies, so what, fix'em do what ever you need to but get it fixed. As far as the hurts of the past inflicted on you, get over it. Going forward you stand a good chance of seeing the same type of people, deal with them, duck, dodge or get the heck out of the road, but don't let them run over you, you should have the experience to see it coming, just walk off if you have too, but don't stand there like a target...

I'm tellin' ya, smoke some weed. All that stuff will dissolve and you will find a new perspective that is healing and even amusing.

I usually don't deal with shame, I just let it do it's thing. It makes it so I will not do what caused the shame again, strengthens my resolve. If it is shame where shame is not needed, I look at why i feel shame when I should not, and usually I find a manipulative bad person at the root of it.

It seems you spend a lot of time imagining what people might be thinking about you or how they are judging you. They rarely are. If you are awkward about connecting with people because you feel they may 'see through you', try and reverse the situation, think of something that you have done, or something you beleive about yourself that you find shameful, and then ask yourself a question. If you knew that the person you were taling to had done the same things or had the same beliefs, would you think any the less of them for it? Would you think they weren't worth talking to? If the answer is no, then why waste time thinking others think that of you?

i use to either cut or put harmful chemicals in my body (IE: hard drugs -> Morfine, Oxy/Roxy, Coke, Herione) or the worst, which may sound really pathetic poping coughmedicane. It's a temperary escape, but then the feelings come back the next day double then they already were, which is what leaded to my heavy 4year- addiction.

so if you get a good answer too your question i would truely appreciate it if you pass it on too me. I want to be healthy :[ i'm afraid i'm to far gone though/

Whats done is done... Learn from the past dont have a bad future because of it, its too much work for you. No one has a perfect past and those that say they do, cant see the truth in front of their face.

It takes a lot of courage to gain real knowledge, and sometimes this courage gets misunderstood as stupidity. Perhaps you found yourself doing things you wouldn’t normally do? Things that people generally consider not right? Ask yourself why you did it. Be honest. Recognise the feeling of shame as your heart’s true feeling of the subject, and congratulations! You now understand yourself a little more deeply than before. This is a plus. Now, doing this thing that made you feel shame again…that would be stupidity. You know this. A plus! Feel stronger for knowing yourself. Need to balance the scales? Why not try putting your experience to use? Can others learn from your mistakes? Has your experience given you special insight that people need? Knowledge is power, what can you do with what you know? You can actively turn your shame into assurance for others in need of direction. Cleanse your spirit with action.

Some people are not satisfied knowing something until they have “tried it themselves.” Life is an experiment. Don’t forget that we used to think the world was flat. We thought the guy looking through a bit-o-glass was a loony! With courage, perseverance and personal faith that loony taught us that the world was round. The world needs more people who are willing to take a chance to experiment to truly understand the world; to persevere and share!

I deal with shame by knowing that Jesus has already bore my shame by taking it on his own body on the cross...I read that the reproaches of those who repreoached me fell on him..he was despised and rejected.

so, I dont feel any ashamed of anything..as i meditate on this.
