I would say, then they are slowing lack of interests and trying to avoid your questions.
Seems to be on the wrong side of interests.
Has no clue, what they feel or want! (Feeling confused)
Keep misunderstanding you and who you are as individual.
Seems to be on sidetrack with you.
Making comparison with their former "friend".
And unsecured about you and where this might lead!!
Too nervous to realize the potential of the relationship (All kinds).

I try to avoid this person, and it hasn't worked. I don't start any conversations anymore, and they are still texting me. I'm just getting really irritated. He keeps asking me what's wrong, and I don't think he has a clue how infantile I find this relationship.

Thy to break it down gently to him on a level, which you think he might understand! Yes! Very annoying! I would report him for harassment and hopefully, he will learn a lesson or two! Good luck and I hope you will get your problem resolved soon.

It is pretty hard, Maybe just break it to them in an 'oblivious' kind of way, Or just come come right out. If it is someone you really care about, try to be gentle.
But on the other hand, If its someone you don't care for a great deal, Just break it to them in a sensible manner.
If their smart enough, they will understand you told them for their own benefit, and potentially save them from embarrassing or awkward situations! :D
