How do you feel about corporeal punishment?

Physical punishment instead of jail time.

The death penalty has no correlation with reducing crime - corporeal punishment certainly won't. Prison and punishment are not, and never have been effective deterrents. You have to affect cultural and economic change to reduce crime rates.

I can't understand why prisons are holiday camps. Will we have so much crime if prisoners had to sleep on cold floors with sawdust, use the corner as a toilet, and have to rely on family bringing them food?
Civilising prisons did not work. Why should anyone who steps from society's laws and become 'outlaw' have any rights at all?
Either this, or simply indenture them to their victims' or victims' families for a certain time to earn monies for them, with the penalty for not doing this being capital?

How much time have you spent in prison? And if you have, do you want to go back to have a nice vacation?

None! I take being a citizen seriously, and I think the law is our only safeguard in society. Either obey the law, vote to have a voice to change, or be American and buy a gun, be neurotic and die confused.

Against it, the society (or state) can remove a criminal from the group, but it goes to far when they own your body. I agree that jails aren't the best solution, forced labour or community service would be better.

It's better than the child figuring out that being told no doesn't actually stop them doing what they want.

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of lashing instead of jailtime for adults.

Against it. There is no reason that a "Civilized" society should practice it.

Is it less civilized than trapping people in a place surrounded by other criminals?

Much more effective than incorporeal punishment. On the other hand, I'm against corporal punishment in most cases, and definitely against it in schools, etc.

It's an emotional issue, that's for sure. We used to get hit at school by teachers. 90% of the time we deserved it. If we went home and complained, we usually got in trouble again. I'm not sure we're better off by removing cororal punishment from schools. Now I've heard NCO's no longer strike recruits in basic training. If that's so, my initial reaction is.. Whaaaaaaaaaat??!!???

Military training is a bit different. But I do think we've gone overboard in the schools in the sense that now making a child write out an assignment because they behaved badly is consider corporal punishment.
