How do you fight gender roles?

have problems from time to time with women expecting me to change tires or lift objects for them that they could easily lift themselves and I know good and well they are asking me to do this stuff because of my sex. I don't want to be rude or unhelpful but the last thing I want to do is cause more hurt by perpetuating a dehumanizing system of gender roles. How do you be polite and refuse to participate in this degrading system?

emperorofcali: I would be polite to any one it has nothing to do with them being women.

I try to wear my Martha Stewart thong panties beneath my Mr. T A-Team wardrobe...but society seems to frown upon men doing such behavior.

To answer your question: Why dont you just ask "why cant you"?
Guys do it at my job all the time.

Most men I know dont seem to mind dealing with lifting something for a woman, since women generally are shorter and less strong. If thats the true case then why not help someone?

The same with a tire. The last time I got one I didnt have a jack, and my brother was coming to bring one. About 5 men stopped to ask if I needed help, including a local police officer.

If you're polite, then just change the damn tire!
Is it about gender or about doing what's right and polite?
helping others who may need help!

hey... do you do dishes?

You can't fight a "system", really. It's not your game, and it's not your playing field. Why get drawn into it? You're not the one with the gender role issues, they are. Understanding it is no different than understanding racism. If your black and someone says, "Hey, I know damn well you can play some mean basketball", what would you do? Women who ask you to conform to male stereotypes aren't much different. They don't mean any harm. It's just another form of ignorance. But to feel like you have to treat them with any degree of politeness just because they're women might be just as sexist. You can be compassionate and still feel like you deserve better company.

Why not be a mentor and help your woman friends break their own self-imposed limitations, if that is what it really is? Just say. "Let's do it together!" When it comes to the lifting part, say "Why don't you give it a try, and I'll jump in of you get in trouble. Here's how I would do it ... bend your knees a little ... that's it, you've got it!"

I have found that often even with seemingly "guy" stuff that appears to involve brawn, their is a little trick involved that makes it more brain than brawn. But these tricks have to be learned, and instead of creating a conflict, you could be the one to invite women into the world of "men's work", just as I'm sure you have heard one or two invitations to participate in "women's work".
