How do you help someone with bipolar?

How do you help someone with bipolar? I have depression myself so I can understand a little but I am lost at the same time. I was told not to take the snappiness personally, but that is hard to do when it is being directed at you. I love this person so much. They are refusing meds, because they said that in the past they made things worse. Any advice????

I agree with Tink on this one. I am also bipolar and refuse to take medicine. When I was younger I had no choice but to swallow the horrible personality stealing drugs; now I'm older I don't I made the decision for myself. For some the medicine does help but for a some (like your friend) it just makes everything worse.

There really isn't anything you can do but be there and know how to help when they ask for some.

Hope everything works out for the best.

You could start by not judging your friend. They don't just have bipolar disorder, they SUFFER from bipolar disorder. It hurts them even more then it hurts you because they can't control it or get away from it. In the end, if you love this person, you will learn to just be patient and understanding.

Someone who has a friend or a family member should do their best to get this person into counseling. There is, really, very little that a person can do for someone who has bipolar disorder. In most cases, all a person can do is to be as supportive as they can while they try to get this person interested in going counseling. What a person can do is to find out all they can about bipolar disorder so that they can find out if this person really is suffering from this kind of depression. Online counselors are available to answer any questions and concerns that a person may have regarding the illness. One a person determines whether or not they think their friend or family member is possibly suffering from bipolar disorder, than they might be able to persuade the person to consult a counselor. Many people with this kind of disorder will not want to accept that there is anything wrong, so convincing them to see a counselor can be a hard task, but it must be done. Most will be more open to the idea of consulting an online counselor, because it is convenient and also because they won’t have to take too much time and effort to go see a counselor in person. If they can be persuaded to give online counseling a try, they just might be able to get the help and treatment they need.

i am bipolar and the best you can do for someone is to be there for them but if they aren't willing to do what it takes to get better don't let them take it out on you

Hi, listen I happen to be bipolar, and my doc told my mother that people always hurt the ones they love the most-because they know you'll forgive them. when I first got diagnosed, I wouldn't take my meds like I was supose to. I was living with my parents at the time, I was 30....my mom hand feed me my meds for about 6 months and then finally I started taking them on my own. good luck
