How do you prepare for pregnancy?

I am planning to have a baby in two or three years. How can I take this time to prepare myself? Any moms out there with some tips. I am so excited, but I know it takes much more than that! *giggles How can the father prepare for this, besides brace his wallet :P

-Thanks very helpful everyone! I think I just have to read a couple books... I have handled lots of children. I also have a poodle, who in my books is worse than any screaming child ever :P

Just keep an open heart. It is never a "text book" situation. Follow your gut instincts. My hubby and I did the lamaz(?) thing, and it just freaked him out. Once you are in labor, and you have the baby, your instincts will come naturally. Sleep now!! You will never sleep so soundly again. Listen to your mom, aunts, anyone close to you who has done this, and it will be a lot easier. Good luck...and you will have post-partum.

All the planning and thinking in the world is all well and good but it just happend when it happens....I always find (and I did with the birth of my daughter..) that 'happy accidents' are the way to go...

Sometimes you can 'plan' stuff out so much...and get a bit fearful....when you 'get' pregnant it's a case of having to deal with it....which I think is the best way...

Also, for all the ammounts of literature and/or experts out there, you will find that some things work/some things don't....children ARE very individual little creatures, we all know that....but it happens from the start! LOL!

Anyways....enjoy....

read, talk with other parents, watch videos, and then forget everythign you hear and see. no blueprints. (darn the luck).
but try not to over prepare and over plan. it's a joy to be a parent. and wonderful to grow along with your child.

buy bigger clothes....lol. seriously though, there are tons of books, both you and your spouse can read. theres also all sorts of parenting classes....if you have any friends with kids, offer to babysit, thats the best way to get hands on experience....also, eat right and take vitamins. you definitely want to be healthy....healthy mommies have healthy babies!!! congrats!!!

start taking prenatal vitamins now... its very good for you ... excerise and get your rest... try not to stress too much and also start reading books and hanging with people who have small children... get use to handling them and you can also take a parenting class or two

Take your prenatle vitamins, eat healthy, exercise all the way through your pregnancy, WALK A LOT expecially during the last month, read books. To prepare the dad have him read books, go with you to your doctor visits. But in reality nothing can prepare you for the life changing experience you are going to go through after having a baby. It is a wonderful one.

They recommend you taking folic acid ( B vitamin) about 3 months before you actually are going to start trying...it has been shown to lower the chances of birth defects. Taking prenatal vitamins, can be done anytime...

Stop smoking, and drinking, if you do those things. They have been associated with fetal injury....low birth weight, fetal alcohol syndrome...and birth defects.

Those first 3 months are so important, when everything (heart, brain, liver, spleen, spinal cord, etc) are developing....the fetus is very vulnerable.

It's great that you are being so pro-active, already....your baby is going to be very lucky to have a mom like that.

over and above what unicorn59 writes...i'd say try and do and achieve everything you want to for yourself before you have your baby. less frustration for you long term. life is not over, it is just totally different - you no longer come first.

Take vitamins, exercise, eat right......... that's how you prepare your body for pregnancy.

Now, to prepare your mind............. good luck with that!

Truth is, everyone's different........I had been trying to get PG for a few years & when it finally happened, I was shocked.
