Resolved Question

How do you stop someone from interrupting you?

I mean constantly talking while you are trying to say something.

I've tried to continue talking over her. I've tried stopping, waiting for her to finish and continuing, but it doesn't work :(

It's getting to the point where it makes me angry that my friend doesn't care about what I have to say, and doesn't want to listen, and I'm going to snap and say some horrible things.

I would let it go, it sounds like that is simply who she is. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. If you don't like the way she talks to you, get some distance. My daughter and I talk like we're both interrupting each other all the time; people with us sometimes comment on it, but I explain we are both passionate and just talk that way to each other. I would never want to be told I'm an interrupter, I would rather the person who thinks that just get out of my life. Good luck.

Be blunt. Next time she interrupts you, just say, "hang on and let me finish".

just stop talking and if they ask you another question or ask why you're not talking then respond with " why are you asking me that-you're just going to interrupt me anyway"

I just give them the dumb look and turn on my heals and walk away - leave them standing there wondering ... What now?

Just by listening a little longer.

Your friend is selfish and self centered. Get the hint she doesn't care or want to hear what you have to say. Get new friends who are mature and part of reality.

I have this with my boyfriend. I constantly have to tell him I'm not finished talking. It's simple, but it's effective.

Get a talking stick, you may only talk when you are holding the stick, you may only hold the stick for x minutes.

As someone who has a tendency to interrupt, I can tell you it comes from a history of not being given the opportunity to speak...my family just talks over one another, so there are no pauses to wait for.

Maybe if you ask questions regularly while you're talking, before she has a chance to interrupt, it will let her know that you are going to give her an opportunity to contribute, so she won't feel compelled to interrupt.

The next time she does it, stop talking. Don't wait until she finishes to start again, that's the whole problem. Just don't speak... a cold sholder sort of thing, but listen, or seem to, and have a blank expression. Not always instant results, but when she catches on, she probably won't ever do it again. Just like with everything else, cold dissappointment is scarier than blind rage.

Just stop, wait for her to take a breath and say "Ok, now interesting people have things to say," and continue. Problem solved.

Oh yeah, that is my pet peeve. I hate when people do that, it's just plain inconsiderate and rude.
