You don't look back, you live in the present moment and make goals for your future. The easiest way to overcome bad memories is to reprogramme yourself to look at things in a positive way. For example I always think 'I wouldn't be the compassionate person I am today without having had the experiences I have had.' and 'I do a fantastic job of being a parent because I was determined that my own children would have a much better upbringing than I had' and 'I have learnt so much from the mistakes that my family made.' Don't be fooled into thinking that everyone out there has had a happy life. Many people haven't and many families hide dark secrets. You are not alone. Educate yourself. 'Knowledge is empowerment' The more you know, the more control you have of your own life and future. Good luck to all of you survivers out there and remember 'What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger!'

It's a "work in progress" for the rest of your life. Learning as much as you can about the brain and the forming of neural connections will help a great deal, as will finding a good counsellor, reading lots of "self help" psychology books and consciously striving to be better than your beginnings. Or you could be like me and find a tremendous amount of peace and healing in writing about it.

the worst mistake I have made in this regard is thinking that now it's over and I have done something about it, I will never feel those feelings again. You cannot un-know what you know, or un-live what you have experienced. You will always have the memories but it is possible to remove the sting from them and they grow less and less powerful to effect you in the present.

some good answers were given here............I love EP. There are so many people on here that I would love to communicate with

I don't think you ever do. . . BUT you could start by forgiving those who wronged you. . .or simply cutting them out of your life.

I think you have to learn how to let it go. It's very difficult but when you do, you're going to feel 1000 times better.

First you have to decide to get over it.. then you have to forgive not just others but yourself.. perhaps come counciling may be helpful and for some of us it is vital.. and then you just go about your life and realize that sometimes it will come back to haunt you when your at your weakest point.. for me it's when my heart gets broken.. then you process what you must and move on again.

By knowing you cant change the past but you can the future...to possibly face those that have wronged you and give them a chance to explain and./or apologize..if they dont then move on ...its their loss and you have done nothing to deserve what has happened to you.Know that you are a person and deserve to be free of the demons that have possessed you and that the future, your future will be better !

I'm afraid we can't get over it, we can't wipe it away. However, with help, we can begin to see ourselves as a good person, worthy of love and respect. Remember WE are not responsible for other peoples wrongs. Find someone who will listen to what happened to you over and over again. Talking about it and the feelings you have now and before, when this happening. Write your story down, all the feelings. I found it helped to find an alone place and let my anger out-yell at the top of your lungs for the nightmare you lived. I felt relief. I do feel better now, I'm busy with other things. The memories will never go away, but they are not dominating my life anymore.

It's your choice to whether you want to let go of the past. One can....by looking to the future. Create goals the make you happy and surround yourself with positive people.
Stop letting the people who hurt you control your current life by allowing yourself stop dwelling on the things they did to you. It's not easy but one can move on. I know you can...because I did and I came from a very dark childhood. Blessings to you.
