it seems like a bike would be better for commuting and getting around. It always seems like the roads are too rough for skating.

I think getting from point A to point B on a board is not too hard. I would recommend a long board for that type of commuting. To do it in style and skill takes a ton of practice. have you considered roller blades? but the 80s are over so they might not be as cool. You might be able to carry more on a bicycle, and it might be a bit safer if your new to skateboarding. Or go all out and get a scooter. They are probably better than a motorcycle for city traveling since there are less restrictions on where you can park one.
