To me, people have gotten lazier. That's not to say there aren't hard workers - but it seems like a few have to pull the slack for the rest, at almost any job. To make it harder on the driven ones, management cuts jobs at every opportunity, to save money. That puts even more strain on the real working man. I know - I've been there. Our sports department used to have six people in it - and I considered myself hard working. Then one retired and they didn't replace him. So I did more work. Then another got fired. Guess what? No replacement. As of the last day I worked, there were three of us doing what six used to do. And downtime? There was hardly any. Some days, we barely had time to wolf down a sandwich, sitting at our desks and trying to type while eating it.

Mine has not changed. I want to be the best. The more value I have to my employer, the more he wants to keep me their and happy. When I have special needs or requests, this means I will get a more favorable response. I have become used to employers contacting me before changes and getting my input first. I know they do not and cannot do that with everyone. It is nice being consulted before policy changes and having into to them so I am comfortable with changes. I often hear it mentioned that my generation has a good work ethic and the younger people do not. Rules may control the pay. But even in a large multinational company like my last two, they find other ways to reward me. Usually with time which I value. Love my 4 10s and 3 days off and being able to bypass the vacation request process to take a day off with no notice. I think if employers could find more people with a good work ethic, they could relax some policies and have a more pleasant working enviroment. They would like that and the improved productivity. But todays workers make that a distant dream. They do not want to work and look to do the least possible to get their paycheck and push all rules to their limits. Then wonder why the rules become tighter and the limits less.

Well when I turned African-American, I stopped working completely and lived off the government.

The question should be is there still a work ethic remaining in the country. We have become a welfare society with 92 weeks of unemployment insurance, food stamps and the like. Who wants to work when a check arrives weekly and no effort is expended in acquiring it.
Locally we have countless decent paying skilled jobs going wanting. They cannot be filled because of failure of passing drug tests or simply lack of applications.

the governments of developed countries have evolved to the point where they try to do everything for citizens, as the citizens have demanded. They make people dependent on them and give people a sense of entitlement. How many times have you heard this?
"Why doesn't the government do something about that?". Well why don't you get of your *** and do something about it yourself?

I used to be far more motivated to work, now, nowhere near as much, and i am much happier. Having good work ethic only ever brought be grief at school, when i lost it, things went much smoother, not smoothly, but more smoothly than before. since then, i never got it back.

Much worse. Hostility and office politics prevail. Incompetence.
