by 'subtext' do you mean 'inference' ???? it's dumb or/and frustrating to hope most of the dummies on this planet can/will pick up on even benign quick reparte - much less meaningfull inference - it's not their fault ...... you have to LOOK real hard to find places or/and mentors where/with whom you can actually learn how to THINK in modern western civilization especially today.....so whatcha gonna do ????

In my opinion, it is very important because in some cases it is the subtext that is the message. In other cases, we may read too much into what might have been intended as a simple statement.

As Lascar infers, not many people are that quick on the uptake, so we must be careful with whom we share our ripostes, as they more than likely won't "get" it.

It's always a pleasure to communicate with those who are on our wavelength because there's so little need for explanations. Unfortunately, it's all to rare to find these kindred spirits.

Unfortunately I have a tendency to 'understand' subtext which is not there!

Pretty essential. I don't worry these days though whether people pick up on it or not, I put it out and if it isn't picked up upon then I don't bother explaining. Guess I use it as a kind of test to find out whether it would be worthwhile continuing a conversation or relationship with someone. If they can't detect the subtleties of a less than explicit conversation and everything has to be spelled out for them, I usually can't be bothered to pursue it. Hence my irritation at the acronym 'lol', but I don't want to get into that again...
